While official sword patterns did not begin until 1788, there were numerous styles which followed a repeated pattern. Often these patterns are dated from images of them located in old paintings or from examples of these swords with an actual date on them or a maker’s mark for whom we know the period of when the maker was active.

Hunting Sword ca.1690. Small hangers such as these saw a variety of uses. From their traditional usage as a hunting sword to being the sword of choice for naval officers in the late 1600s to early 1700s.
