We are now within 100 years of the first official patterned swords which would be designated in 1786/88. Until this point, there are general styles of swords dated by reference points such as old paintings where the date is known, by actual date marks on the blades or by maker’s marks where there are records as to when that maker was active.

Hunting Sword ca.1690. Small hangers such as these saw a variety of uses. From their traditional usage as a hunting sword to being the sword of choice for naval officers in the late 1600s to early 1700s.
